Dear TC Community members:

Due to the success achieved from our CogAT class held in past summers, we again roll out CogAT class for our summer program this year (6/16-8/4) to help out the children of our community.

This class is designed for students who are rising to 2nd grade in Fall 2025. In Fairfax County Public School, Children are required to take two ability screening tests. All first grade students are required to complete the NNAT and all second grade students are required to take the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test). Just like NNAT, the CogAT test is used to measure students’ academic aptitude, and to identify and place students in Level 4 Advanced Academic Programs (formerly Gifted and Talented Program).

The best way to prepare for the CogAT is by exposing your child to its format and the types of questions they will see on the day of the test. Our Summer CogAt Prep Class helps your child to familiarize with the type of its questions, formats and test taking strategies. Our class goal is not only to prepare your child, but more so to enrich their thinking skills.

HCS-TC Summer CogAT Prep Class Covers three sections and 9 topics:

- Verbal, which measures your child’s vocabulary, sentence, and analogy skills

  •  Picture Analogies

  •  Sentence Completion

  •  Picture Classification

-Non-Verbal, which measures your child’s ability to understand patterns, symbols

(same or different), and abstract thinking skills.

  •  Number Analogies

  •  Number Puzzles

  •  Number Series

- Quantitative, which measures your child’s basic numeracy, and problem solving skills.

  •  Figure Matrices

  •  Paper Folding

  •  Figure Classification

If your child is a rising 2nd grader, he or she can benefit greatly from this highly demanded class.

Best,

HCSTC
