New Class from HCSTC for the Coming Spring Semester

Geometry Class Introduction (Hope Chinese School Tyson’s Corner) Great News!

Hope Chinese School Tyson’s Corner Campus will be offering Geometry class this coming spring semester for our middle school students (specifically for current 7th grade students in public school). Here is the summary for the class: 1. About this class: Our Geometry class is only offered during Spring semester. The class is geared to help our 7th grade students who are planning to take their summer geometry class in order to take algebra II in his/her 8th grade. Why Our Spring Geometry class is important? Generally speaking, Geometry is prerequisite for Algebra II in high school. In Fairfax County, middle schools offer Geometry class in summer time for 7th graders, which gives an option to those students who are interested in advancing their math pace. Those who take and pass school’s summer geometry course can study algebra II in their 8th grade; otherwise, students need to take Geometry in 8th grade. This opens an additional year for advanced math in their high school years. Since Fairfax County offers Summer Geometry crash course over a period of 28 days; there is tremendous amount of pressure on students not only completing this class, but studying well enough to achieve desirable final grade as it will be carried into their high school GPA records and have an impact on their final GPAs for college applications. Otherwise, students will have to drop this class before it ends and retake it at the 8th grade. By the way, the county also charged $375 for this 28 days’ class in 2021 summer. Therefore, taking Hope Chinese School’s Spring Geometry Class ahead of the FCPS crash course in summer can help prepare these students tremendously and make their summer lives a lot easier and hopefully their grades a lot better as well. 2. Our Curriculum Our Curriculum follows Fairfax County’s 8th grade Geometry blue print which includes the following areas: 1. To understand the relationships among pairs of angles that are vertical angles, adjacent angles, supplementary angles, and complementary angles to determine the measure of unknown angles. 2. Solving problems involving volume and surface area of cones and square-based pyramids; and describe how changing one measured attribute of a rectangular prism affects the volume and surface area. 3. Given a polygon, apply transformations, to include translations, reflections, and dilations, in the coordinate plane; and identify practical applications of transformations. 4. Know how to prove and compare congruent triangles, similar triangles, and different kinds of angles. 5. Construct a three-dimensional model, given the top or bottom, side, and front views. 6. Verify the Pythagorean Theorem; and apply the Pythagorean Theorem. 7. Solve area and perimeter problems, including practical problems, involving composite plane figures. Hope this new class will provide needed assistance to our students and relieve their frustration commonly seen in the summer time. Geometry text book we'll use: SCHAUM'S Outlines" or AOPS (Introduction to the Geometry). The SCHAUM'S outlines is less challenging but more fun than AOPS, which requires very special training and much more time in order to stay on top it. If your children are interested in this class, you are very welcome to register the Geometry class for the Spring semester. Best wishes and Happy New Year! HCSTC Board
