Introduction of IAAT Prep and Fifth Grade Math Class

Dear All parents: This fall, Hope Chinese School at Tyson’s Corner Campus will continue to roll out the revised fifth grade math curriculum. The big change of this class is that we add the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test (IAAT) preparation on top of the normal 5th grade math curriculum. The goal for this class will be to help our student build a solid math foundation and prepare for a higher level math. Below is the program detail: 1. Course Design: For the fall semester and 1/3 of the spring semester, we will be focusing on Singapore math. For the rest of the spring semester we will be focusing on preparation of IAAT. 2. What is the IAAT and why is it important?

IAAT tests students for their readiness and ability to succeed in Algebra. 3. Each year, Fairfax County Public School students who access a Sixth Grade Advanced Math curriculum take the IAAT around January. Results from this assessment are used as one component of the course placement process for Algebra 1 Honors in Grade 7. The IAAT provides a four-part profile of students that identifies specific areas of strength and weakness. This test is divided into the following 4 sub-tests and the total test time is 40 minutes. 1) Pre-Algebraic Number Skills and Concepts 2) Data Interpretation and Analysis 3) Mathematical Relationships 4) Mathematic Symbols The IAAT is an important test because it is used to determine placement in higher level mathematics courses. If you want your child to be on track for taking AP or IB math classes in high school, your child needs to get a high score on the IAAT test. Hope the above info is helpful for you to make right decisions. Best wishes, HCSTC
