Elem 2nd Grade Math Teaching Plan Changes at HCSTC Campus
Dear Parents,
Great News! As more and more parents requested to add CogAT prep for 2nd graders math class, we’ve decided to offer CogAT prep on top of our regular math curriculum in the first quarter prior to Fairfax public school CogAT test.
Here is the information regarding the Farifax County CogAT test:
Testing date: October 7-31, 2024
About the CogAT test: In Fairfax County Public School, children are required to take two ability screening tests. All first grade students are required to complete the NNAT, and all second grade students are required to take the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test). Just like NNAT, the CogAT test is used to measure students’ academic aptitude and to identify and place students in Level 4 Advanced Academic Programs (formerly Gifted and Talented Programs).
The CogAT Level 8 test has three sections (known as batteries):
Verbal
Quantitative
Nonverbal
Each of these batteries has three question types.
The best way to prepare for the CogAT exam is by exposing your child to the exam format and the types of questions they will see on the day of the test.Below is our teaching plan for the first quarter of fall semesters before County’s CogAT test:
In each class:
1st 25 minutes, CogAT review.
2nd 25 minutes, normal math class.
2nd quarter, class will be back to normal schedule. If you have a child who is going to take the CogAT test this coming fall, please consider registering for our 2nd grade program. For some of the students who already had our school’s summer CogAT class, these new changes will also be very beneficial.
Best regards,
HCSTC
